Chapter Nineteen

Maggie

The subway ride back to Mutt’s warehouse home was uneventful. Even with me wearing this silly outfit, no one bothered us. It probably had something to do with the thundercloud hovering over his head. His scowl had affixed itself to his face. I allowed him to stew in silence. A public subway was not the place to pry his secrets free.

I crossed the cold empty space of the warehouse and shivered. Mutt had promised to increase the heat, but the ceiling was so high that it probably all gathered at the peak. Not to mention the aluminum walls were not exactly insulated. There was no point in asking him to adjust the thermostat. I didn’t even think a bonfire would help.

Once behind the silk screens that surrounded his bedroom, I changed into warmer clothing and was generous with the layers. I ran my fingers over the dress before hanging it in Mutt’s wardrobe. It had been fun playing bait. I could see why my mother had been attracted to this job. When we were reunited, I planned on asking her more about her past. The average girl did not grow up with desires to be a vampire slayer. The majority of humans didn’t even know vampires existed, so how had my mother discovered them?

The rustling of plastic bags caught my attention and I followed the sound to the kitchen. Mutt was unpacking food from the fridge. It had been empty before we’d left.

“Where did all this come from?” I peered into the closest bag and spotted green apples. My favorite.

“I asked Gwen to do a small grocery run since she’s familiar with you. I thought she would know what you liked to eat.”

I raised my eyebrow. “Gwen follows your orders?” She didn’t even listen to her alpha.

Mutt shook his head. “I said I asked her. The trick with Gwen is to say please.” He tossed me an amused glance. “She can’t resist me when I’m polite.”

I could imagine. “A Nosferatu with manners is a dangerous thing.” I plucked an apple from the bag and took a bite. The crisp, sour flavor coated my tongue and I moaned. I hadn’t realized how hungry I was. When had I last had a fresh piece of fruit? Being stowed away on a ship hadn’t given me access to much food. I rubbed my stomach and realized I could feel my ribs. The combination of starving and stress had made me lose too much weight.

He proceeded to set a block of cheese and crusty bread with butter in front of me. “Hot chocolate?”

I nodded with my mouth full and forced myself to chew. Mutt’s back was turned to me as he set the kettle on the stove. He’d had Gwen buy all my favorite things. I sat at the table and watched him prepare two cups from the corner of my eye.

He set a steaming cup, filled with mini marshmallows, in front of me.

“You did your homework.” I wrapped my fingers around the warm cup and luxuriated in the heat.
